Sports medicine and biochemistry related to two sports drinks

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the intestinal fluid absorption rates between an ion supply drink and water using rats.

Methods:
The ion supply drink and water which contained radioisotope (tritium) as a tracer were orally administered to Wistar strain male rats, and their absorption rate was measured by changes in the tracer content in the blood.

Results:
The ion supply drink was 2.3 times more rapidly transferred to the blood from the intestinal tract and was more quickly absorbed compared to water.

Conclusion:
This study shows that the ion supply drink is more rapidly absorbed than water, suggesting that it is useful to quickly and adequately replenish fluid and electrolytes.
